When you hear the name ?Peugeot' you probably think of big diesel-engined estate cars or nippy hatchbacks. You almost certainly don't think of pepper mills. But the world's sixth-largest car manufacturer has been making pepper, salt and coffee mills for longer than they have been making cars. The Peugeot brothers converted the family mill to produce steel in 1810 and began producing pepper mills in 1842, when the steel pepper mill mechanism was invented by a Peugeot engineer. The mechanism was so reliable that it has remained in production, virtually unchanged, ever since and remains the most reliable on the market, so much so that it comes with a lifetime guarantee.

The grind is very even, and for this reason they are very popular with chefs. Peugeot soon expanded into salt mills and coffee grinders and the company recently re-introduced its classic coffee grinder, a design that was originally introduced almost two centuries ago.

Today the mills are made at Besançon, in south-west France. Nowadays they use machines but the production process itself has hardly changed in more than 100 years.
